This is starting to become the NORM- another weekend, another collection of PB's.  Here are the results:

Jeremy Tracey had an amazing peformance at the Laurier Loop.  Despite being in the middle of some very hard weeks for his marathon training, he managed to take over a minute off his 10K personal best, posting a time of 45:56, placing 12th overall and placing 1st in his category.

Nolan Tracey performed extremely well in the 5K, beating 100's of full grown adults, posting a time of 26 minutes.  Visit: www.runwaterloo.com for full results and a race recap.

At the ABC festival, Jordan Schmidt crushed the 5K with a new personal best of 17:06!!  This is almost a 1.5 minute improvement over the last 12 months.  This brought him to the finish in 2nd place overall.

Princess Health and Speaking in Lisbon on October 5. Princessiccia

Princess Health and Speaking in Lisbon on October 5. Princessiccia

My friend Pedro Bastos graciously invited me to speak at a conference he organized in Lisbon on October 5 titled "Food, Nutrition and the Prevention of Chronic Diseases".  I will give two talks:

  • "Ancestral Health: What is Our Human Potential?"  This talk will explore the health of non-industrial cultures in an effort to understand how much of our modern chronic disease burden is preventable, and it will briefly touch on one major aspect of non-industrial life that may protect against the "diseases of civilization".  This presentation will focus on age-adjusted data from high quality studies.
  • "Why Do We Overeat: a Neurobiological Perspective."  This talk will attempt to explain why most of us consume more calories than we need to maintain weight-- a phenomenon that is a central cause of morbidity and mortality in the modern world.  It will touch on some of the brain mechanisms involved in ingestive behavior, and outline a framework to explain why these mechanisms are often maladaptive in today's environment.
Pedro will speak about dairy consumption, vitamin D, and chronic disease.

The conference is targeted to health professionals and students of nutrition, however it's open to anyone who is interested in these topics.  It's sponsored by NutriScience, a Portuguese nutrition education and consulting company.  Sadly, I don't speak Portuguese, so my talks will be in English.

Access the full program, and register for the conference, using the links below:

Princess Health andH+P Racing: Sept 14th and 15, 2013.Princessiccia

Here is the results round-up for the weekend of Sept 14th-15th, 2013:

Kristin on top of the podium at Bracebridge in 2012

A HUGE congratulations goes out to Kristin Marchant for her performance and the Triathlon World Championships.  She trained with us in 2011 and 2012- and is still the Summer TT record holder.  Despite battling chronic, recurrent running injuries, and getting sick the day before the race Kristin still managed to walk away as the WORLD CHAMPION for women aged 20-24 in the Olympic distance tri.  Most impressively, she won the race by about 2 minutes, including running a 36:11 10K off the bike.  Click here to see the full results.

On the highschool racing front, we have to recognize Nicole Shrigley's performance in what was supposed to be a 3K "fun run."  Going in with the plans of taking it easy, Nicole quickly got caught up in the competitive spirit on the day, and ran 12:48 on a windy and hilly course- a 21s PB!

In the cycling world, Vance continues to display excellent consistency despite his lengthy season.  He raced into a top-100 performance at the Centurion C50 in Collingwood- a race we will be targeting as a team for next year!  CLICK HERE for the full results.

Finally, a huge congrats goes out to mountain man himself, Craig Kingston.  He had a great performance at the 5Peaks Heart Lake 14.4K.  He ended up averaging well under 5mins/K on a very technical course, good enough for 5th in his AG.  CLICK for full results.

Princess Health and Aisling: "Once I Started With Zumba I Honestly Haven't Looked Back". Princessiccia

My Zumba Year How to start and keep loving your Zumba routine!

It's just over a year ago since I started Zumba classes with Lily. I want to start this blog article by celebrating that and to offer it as encouragement - if I can stick with one form of exercise for a whole year (and I don't intend to stop) then I'm sure anyone can.

Lily has asked me if I'd be willing to share my story with you to offer encouragement and inspiration. So how did I come to Zumba and why do I think it has stuck?

First, a little about me. I work full time in a busy arts centre. Prior to that I worked in music education - running choirs, teaching singing, delivering large creative music projects. My schedule was irregular so it was difficult to find exercise classes that I could go to. When I moved to Dublin two years ago to take up a new job I decided to give Zumba a try.  Given my huge love of music and my reputation amongst my friends for dancing at the drop of a hat, I thought it might suit me.

Zumba is definitely fun and it is also a serious workout. Picture me at the end of my 1st class with my face roaring red and my hair literally dripping wet not to mention my brain fried from the sheer concentration of trying to follow the steps! Despite this unattractive beginning, once I started with Zumba I honestly havent looked back.

So how did I stick with it so far? For a start, it gets easier and more and more fun - youll be surprised how quickly you get used to the steps and how your fitness improves.

Secondly, Lily's classes are conveniently close to either where I work or my home at times that flow easily with my daily life. This has been a major factor in being able to stick to the routine.

Thirdly, unlike other teachers, Lily runs her classes through the summer so you can stay in your exercise rhythm year round and you dont have to start again from scratch in September.

Finally, Lily's classes are great value for money and buying the flexible no expiry class cards helps me stay committed as well as saving money.

I commit myself to going to one class a week and consider anything beyond this a bonus. Maybe because I dont pressurise myself to do more than this, I often I make it to two classes and, very occasionally on very good weeks, even 3!

So in short here is what I have learned my top tips for loving your Zumba routine:

You are not lacking in self-discipline

What makes it difficult to stick to any routine is not lack of discipline its whether or not the practicalities of getting to the class are easy or awkward. As Lilys classes are either close to work or home at times that easily fit my daily routines, I dont have to summon tonnes of determination every week to go.  In fact Ive found I can actually stick to a routine quite easily - and even enjoy it!

Having choice and flexibility in class days and times really helps

I go through periods in my work for example where I 'm on duty on Saturdays but with Lilys classes I can go on Tuesdays or Thursdays on those weeks so I am better able to stick with it even during busy work times.

Eat a banana or a small snack about an hour before the class

It is great having 6pm classes so I can go straight from work to Zumba, but it is also dinner time and theres nothing worse than trying to get through a high energy Zumba class while battling the hunger shakes!

Bring a big bottle of water with you

Try to hydrate throughout the day and before the class as well perhaps keep the water bottle on your desk to remind you to drink.

Invest in a pair of dance fitness shoes

This will protect your joints and also make doing all the twists and turns easier. It takes a little adjustment at first as they feel quite different to normal runners when you are wearing them, but Im really glad I bought a pair. Also, if you enjoy other forms of dance (which I suspect you might if you are a Zumbaddict!) you can wear them for those classes too.

The busier or more stressed you are, the more you need to go to Zumba

I find it is very tempting to stay late at work out of anxiety when times are stressful, but in fact I am always more productive the next day and better able to cope with the stress if I choose to go to Zumba instead. Exercise helps me to let go and relax mentally which is not something that comes easily to me, but it has certainly improved this past year with the help of Zumba.

The mental battle is harder than the physical

It was a huge aha moment for me when I realised this. Get yourself some support - whether it be asking your friends and family to remind you that you always feel better after going to a class, setting a reminder on your phone to go off an hr before the class with a positive encouraging message on it, or putting a picture of you when you looked and felt great on your fridge or by your bed to remind you of your goal.

Don't worry about getting the moves wrong!

Easier said than done of course, especially in the beginning. But remember this is about exercise and fitness so the main thing is to keep moving at all times your heart and lungs don't care if you moved your left foot or right hand at the wrong time. The body just loves having a workout - so just keep moving.

 Wear a watch in class

This really helps me with the mental battle and wanting to give up in the middle of the class, especially in the beginning when my fitness and energy levels were low. Sometimes a whole class can feel like forever. Wearing a watch helps me beak down the classes into smaller more doable chunks of time. I can see there is only 20 mins left, for example, which feels doable. Or I can encourage myself and say well done when I see I am halfway through a class, or almost there.  Now a year on I don't need it as much it still helps me on bad or tired days.

All that Zumba shaking and hip wiggling is great for your organs

Being in good condition isn't just about the outside - it's also crucially to do with the condition of our vital organs on the inside that keep us alive and healthy. Wiggling and shaking may not be very Irish but it is excellent for toning and conditioning the internal organs which is vital for true health. Plus its great fun, freeing and joyful to move your body in new ways!

Thank you Lily for the great classes, the encouraging atmosphere and for inviting me to write this blog post which I have really enjoyed. I  hope these tips help some of you and I look forward to at least another year of great Zumba classes - see you there!

Princess Health andH+P Early Sept Racing.Princessiccia

Princess Health andH+P Early Sept Racing.Princessiccia

The summer is coming to an end, but H+P is still out there, crushing race courses.  Here are some recent results:

Luke Eghoetz had an amazing race at the 2013 1/2 Ironman World Championships.  He averaged over 35hm/h on the bike, ran just over 1:30 for the half marathon, and managed to place inside the top 40 for his AG.  Click here for the results.

Sue and Liz both had awesome performances in the Wasaga Beech Sprint Duathlon.  It was their first time ever doing a multisport event- Liz even manged to place 3rd in her AG!  Results.

Erik had a great showing at the half-Ironman in Muskoka.  Coming of injuries from his Ironman, Erik still went out and had fun, placing in the top 50 in his AG!  Results.

Vance, despite a busy summer of racing, was back at it- this time in Montreal for the Duathlon National Championships.  He tore up the course, placing top 10 in his AG.  Results.

Adam and Kev had one last showdown for the year at the Hy-Vee Olympic National Triathlon Championships (for USA).  Adam did take the win, but Kev unfortunately suffered a flat on the course.  He did finish the race on a positive note though with a sub-42 10K.  Results.

Princess Health and Laetitita:"I Lost The Baby Weight In No Time". Princessiccia

I started Zumba class with Lily after I had my second baby. I was already going to Zumba classes elsewhere and I really enjoyed it.

My first class with Lily was a great experience because I was doing a real work out. She was really good and really professional.

I was sweating more than at any other Zumba class. It was a completely different experience. The steps are easy to follow because Lily is a great teacher. While teaching she is smiling all the time.

For a few months I went to her classes several times a week and  I combined it with a healthy diet. I lost my extra weight in no time. More importantly I got rid of the nasty cellulite around my legs.

Princess Health and Jessica: "I Lost Weight And I Felt Better About My Body". Princessiccia

I discovered Zumba fitness 3 years ago. At this time, I was 17 kilos more. I was unconfident and uncomfortable with my body. I always enjoyed dancing but I never liked intensive sport. That's why, it was hard for me to lose weight.

A friend told me about Zumba class, a new fitness program, where you move your body, dance, lose calories and have fun at the same time. So, we decided to try this new revolutionary program together. I enjoyed Zumba fitness immediately.

I loved the musics because they were very motivating and I liked all the choreographies. I didn't realize that I was losing calories during the class because I had fun. Moreover, I shared this moment with three friends, so it was very funny.

One year after discovering Zumba class, I lost a little bit weight but not enough for me (because I practiced Zumba class only once a week and my eating habits were very bad). So, I decided to change these habits thanks to a nutritionist. She showed me how to eat healthier. I discovered a lot of new foods and recipes. I learnt how to cook vegetables and fruits.

What's more, I decided to go to Zumba class more often (around 3 times a week). And the more I went, the more I loved it. After a Zumba class, I felt really good. I was smiling and proud of me because I gave all my energy. Rapidly, I lost weight and I felt better about my body.

Now, I think I'm addicted to Zumba fitness. When I arrived to Dublin 10 months ago, I really missed Zumba fitness. One of my principal purpose was to find a new class because I couldn't live without dancing.

Fortunately, I found Lily's class few months after. It made me smile and happy again !!

Princess Health and Christina: "It Has Changed The Way I Live My Life: ZUMBA Makes Me HAPPY". Princessiccia

My name is Christina, I am 42 years old and I am a ZUMBAholic :)

In the past I have tried many types of sports to take good care of my body: aerobics, step-, boxing-aerobics, Tai chi, swimming, walking, jogging, training in a gym; you name it! All of these sports were interesting and exciting at the beginning but after a few months I always started to get bored and found every one of them monotonous and dull. So, I ended up quitting every time!

As I love dancing and music in general, I had often thought, how nice it would be to be able to tone my body while moving to cool songs. So, when one day a friend told me about ZUMBA, I gave it a try.  This was 18 months ago and I haven't stopped going to Lily's classes ever since! I was even at a Zumbathon! And I have already convinced a few others to try it out; most of them are still in the group!

I could mention many healthy benefits that ZUMBA has for my body, such as calorie burn, toning, stress release, the social aspect of it (it is ageless!), the fun, time passes (too) quickly, etc. And of course the fact, that Lily is AMAZING as an instructor and her classes feel as if all is a big beach party!!

BUT the most important thing that ZUMBA does for me is also the most essential, as it has changed the way I live my life ever since I've started it: ZUMBA makes me HAPPY.... every time....and that is addictive :))

Do you wonder if ZUMBA can make you happy too? If you never try, you'll never know! Click here for timetable and class locations!

Princess Health and Is Refined Carbohydrate Addictive?. Princessiccia

Princess Health and Is Refined Carbohydrate Addictive?. Princessiccia

[Note: in previous versions, I mixed up "LGI" and "HGI" terms in a couple of spots. These are now corrected. Thanks to readers for pointing them out.]

Recently, a new study was published that triggered an avalanche of media reports suggesting that refined carbohydrate may be addictive:

Refined Carbs May Trigger Food Addiction
Refined Carbs May Trigger Food Addictions
Can You be Addicted to Carbs?
etc.

This makes for attention-grabbing headlines, but in fact the study had virtually nothing to do with food addiction. The study made no attempt to measure addictive behavior related to refined carbohydrate or any other food, nor did it aim to do so.

So what did the study actually find, why is it being extrapolated to food addiction, and is this a reasonable extrapolation? Answering these questions dredges up a number of interesting scientific points, some of which undermine popular notions of what determines eating behavior.
