Princess Health and How To Switch To Healthy Cosmetics?. Princessiccia

Once upon a time....

There was a girl who fell in love with perfumes and all scented cosmetics and household products. She also loved expensive face creams and body lotions, strongly believing in their advertised "magic", and always having dozens of them in her bathroom.

Then one day very ugly and itchy patches appeared on her body and she ran to the doctor. The good news was that it had nothing to do with bacteria, the bad news was that she had to find out what she used she became allergic to.

That girl was myself, and that was when my journey in the cosmetics and toiletries research started.
Well, it wasn't easy at the beginning. I started with changing my washing powder  to another one having a baby on the bottle, thinking that it was more gentle (now I know it actually wasn't), and I changed my perfumed body lotion to a baby lotion, which I thought was very gentle, designed for babies (actually they contain even more harsh chemicals...).

These changes didn't make a big difference, so I had to go further. I started my research.  And what I found was mind-blowing.

Did you know for example that the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) did a study in 1988, analising the 3000 most common active substances used in cosmetics (yes, I was surprised myself too by the high number of ingredients used...).  What they found was that 1/3 of the substances analised were severely toxic, could lead to infertility, could cause biological mutation, cancer and could cause skin and eye irritation.

Scary, is it?

Do you think there were any changes since then? No, unfortunately no changes.

Here is a link which takes you to the breastcancerfund.org website, where you'll find a list of some of the most harmful chemicals:

You might ask now: Why? How? How is it possible that these products are on shelves and we can buy them? Well, the industry is not really regulated, and don't ask me why. Profit mainly and other reasons. I have my own theory, you can find yours.

My goal now is to give you few tips to easily switch to more gentle versions of products we put on our skin. Did you know by the way that harmful chemicals get absorbed twice as fast through the skin as through our gastrointestinal tract?

So back to my story, after first finding a list of harmful chemicals to look for on labels, I ran to the bathroom to check them. Well, all of the things I used were rubbish. Actually worse than rubbish. And going back to the shop with the list in my hand what to avoid, didn't get me anywhere. There were no products I could buy...

To be honest, a regular pharmacy or cosmetics/toiletries shop can call themselves 'cancer-shop' or 'infertility-shop', or 'eczema-shop'.

So let's see what you can do:

1. Hand wash

At home, I have a very gentle, fully natural soap, more like the one my grandmother used to make. It never dries my skin. If you use natural products for cleansing, you will never need hand cream. I always carried a hand cream in my bag, no need for it in the last few years.

And this might sound weird at first: when not at home, I only wash my hands with plain water. And what about all the bacteria?- you might ask. Well, bacteria are not that bad guys as they were advertised.

There are good bacteria and bad bacteria. We all have bacteria in and on our bodies. Their job is to protect us. They are the good guys. They fight the bad bacteria when they want to attack us. Now once you wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap, you kill all the good bacteria too on your hand, and there will be no protection.

Am I getting sick or ill because not washing my hands with soap? Do I get a cold easily? Do I get any infection? No. Never. Literally never. Although I used to be sick very often before. Now I protect my own good bacteria and then they can protect me. Very simple, isn't it?

All bacteria and viruses attacking us should always be fight by our protective system, our immune system. When you get a cold, it is not because there is a flu-season. It is because you did something to your own system and it became weak, not being able to protect you.

2. Hair

There are few natural products out there in health shops, not having all the bad stuff in them. You have to be prepared for an experiment-period. At the beginning you might find that the product you choose is not doing what you expected. Be patient. Once you find the right one, you'll never look back.

3. Body

To wash my body, I use the same natural, sometimes hand-made soap as for my hands. They are fantastic! And again, my skin won't get dry!

Sometimes I still want to nurture it a bit, so here are few tips what to use instead of body-lotion:
-almond oil
-avocado oil
-olive oil
-yoyoba oil

And many other available in health shops. My skin is softer and younger than ever!

4. Face

This is my favorite part to talk about.

I always had a mixed skin, oily, with big pores, but dry at the same time. It was always a nightmare to find the right cream, tonic, lotion etc. That's why I never minded to pay more if that was for the right product.

Well, first of all, there is no need for that many products. I only use three products now:

a./ Eye make up removing: yoyoba oil
b./ Cleansing: soap - yes, the same soap what I mentioned twice before :)
c./ Cream - No cream! Oil instead! At the moment I'm using argan oil, but coconut oil is  also amazing. Oil on oily skin? Well, I was surprised myself too when first heard about it, and was afraid to try it, but actually they do a miracle. They are able to make your skin find the right balance. I have friends using avocado oil or olive oil on their face, but those were too heavy for me.

And voila! My face looks much younger, I pay much less for products and spend much less time in the bathroom!

5. Make up

There are some very good natural brands out there, however they might not provide the same coverage. But you won't even need it, as your face will have a healthy beautiful glow!

6. Household, cleaning products

Again, if you visit a health shop, you will find brands offering skin-friendly, environment-friendly, but very effective products.

I have to confess here something: there are two products I still haven't changed: the mascara and the hair dye... Yes, that's the truth. But I'm getting there!

So don't get scared now that you have to change all the products you use on your body and in your house. You can do it on a gradient. However, the best would be to change everything as soon as possible.

And one more thing, which is very important: we use all those products on our body because we want healthier looking skin, we want to be more beautiful. Don't forget, that beauty starts from the inside. Firstly, the food you eat will be shown on your body and on your face, secondly, exercising has highly beneficial effects on your skin tone and texture, and thirdly, the way you feel about yourself and about others will also show on your face.

Be beautiful, inside and out!

Princess Health and Speaking in Lisbon on October 5. Princessiccia

Princess Health and Speaking in Lisbon on October 5. Princessiccia

My friend Pedro Bastos graciously invited me to speak at a conference he organized in Lisbon on October 5 titled "Food, Nutrition and the Prevention of Chronic Diseases".  I will give two talks:

  • "Ancestral Health: What is Our Human Potential?"  This talk will explore the health of non-industrial cultures in an effort to understand how much of our modern chronic disease burden is preventable, and it will briefly touch on one major aspect of non-industrial life that may protect against the "diseases of civilization".  This presentation will focus on age-adjusted data from high quality studies.
  • "Why Do We Overeat: a Neurobiological Perspective."  This talk will attempt to explain why most of us consume more calories than we need to maintain weight-- a phenomenon that is a central cause of morbidity and mortality in the modern world.  It will touch on some of the brain mechanisms involved in ingestive behavior, and outline a framework to explain why these mechanisms are often maladaptive in today's environment.
Pedro will speak about dairy consumption, vitamin D, and chronic disease.

The conference is targeted to health professionals and students of nutrition, however it's open to anyone who is interested in these topics.  It's sponsored by NutriScience, a Portuguese nutrition education and consulting company.  Sadly, I don't speak Portuguese, so my talks will be in English.

Access the full program, and register for the conference, using the links below:

Princess Health andH+P Racing: Sept 14th and 15, 2013.Princessiccia

Here is the results round-up for the weekend of Sept 14th-15th, 2013:

Kristin on top of the podium at Bracebridge in 2012

A HUGE congratulations goes out to Kristin Marchant for her performance and the Triathlon World Championships.  She trained with us in 2011 and 2012- and is still the Summer TT record holder.  Despite battling chronic, recurrent running injuries, and getting sick the day before the race Kristin still managed to walk away as the WORLD CHAMPION for women aged 20-24 in the Olympic distance tri.  Most impressively, she won the race by about 2 minutes, including running a 36:11 10K off the bike.  Click here to see the full results.

On the highschool racing front, we have to recognize Nicole Shrigley's performance in what was supposed to be a 3K "fun run."  Going in with the plans of taking it easy, Nicole quickly got caught up in the competitive spirit on the day, and ran 12:48 on a windy and hilly course- a 21s PB!

In the cycling world, Vance continues to display excellent consistency despite his lengthy season.  He raced into a top-100 performance at the Centurion C50 in Collingwood- a race we will be targeting as a team for next year!  CLICK HERE for the full results.

Finally, a huge congrats goes out to mountain man himself, Craig Kingston.  He had a great performance at the 5Peaks Heart Lake 14.4K.  He ended up averaging well under 5mins/K on a very technical course, good enough for 5th in his AG.  CLICK for full results.

Princess Health and Aisling: "Once I Started With Zumba I Honestly Haven't Looked Back". Princessiccia

My Zumba Year How to start and keep loving your Zumba routine!

It's just over a year ago since I started Zumba classes with Lily. I want to start this blog article by celebrating that and to offer it as encouragement - if I can stick with one form of exercise for a whole year (and I don't intend to stop) then I'm sure anyone can.

Lily has asked me if I'd be willing to share my story with you to offer encouragement and inspiration. So how did I come to Zumba and why do I think it has stuck?

First, a little about me. I work full time in a busy arts centre. Prior to that I worked in music education - running choirs, teaching singing, delivering large creative music projects. My schedule was irregular so it was difficult to find exercise classes that I could go to. When I moved to Dublin two years ago to take up a new job I decided to give Zumba a try.  Given my huge love of music and my reputation amongst my friends for dancing at the drop of a hat, I thought it might suit me.

Zumba is definitely fun and it is also a serious workout. Picture me at the end of my 1st class with my face roaring red and my hair literally dripping wet not to mention my brain fried from the sheer concentration of trying to follow the steps! Despite this unattractive beginning, once I started with Zumba I honestly havent looked back.

So how did I stick with it so far? For a start, it gets easier and more and more fun - youll be surprised how quickly you get used to the steps and how your fitness improves.

Secondly, Lily's classes are conveniently close to either where I work or my home at times that flow easily with my daily life. This has been a major factor in being able to stick to the routine.

Thirdly, unlike other teachers, Lily runs her classes through the summer so you can stay in your exercise rhythm year round and you dont have to start again from scratch in September.

Finally, Lily's classes are great value for money and buying the flexible no expiry class cards helps me stay committed as well as saving money.

I commit myself to going to one class a week and consider anything beyond this a bonus. Maybe because I dont pressurise myself to do more than this, I often I make it to two classes and, very occasionally on very good weeks, even 3!

So in short here is what I have learned my top tips for loving your Zumba routine:

You are not lacking in self-discipline

What makes it difficult to stick to any routine is not lack of discipline its whether or not the practicalities of getting to the class are easy or awkward. As Lilys classes are either close to work or home at times that easily fit my daily routines, I dont have to summon tonnes of determination every week to go.  In fact Ive found I can actually stick to a routine quite easily - and even enjoy it!

Having choice and flexibility in class days and times really helps

I go through periods in my work for example where I 'm on duty on Saturdays but with Lilys classes I can go on Tuesdays or Thursdays on those weeks so I am better able to stick with it even during busy work times.

Eat a banana or a small snack about an hour before the class

It is great having 6pm classes so I can go straight from work to Zumba, but it is also dinner time and theres nothing worse than trying to get through a high energy Zumba class while battling the hunger shakes!

Bring a big bottle of water with you

Try to hydrate throughout the day and before the class as well perhaps keep the water bottle on your desk to remind you to drink.

Invest in a pair of dance fitness shoes

This will protect your joints and also make doing all the twists and turns easier. It takes a little adjustment at first as they feel quite different to normal runners when you are wearing them, but Im really glad I bought a pair. Also, if you enjoy other forms of dance (which I suspect you might if you are a Zumbaddict!) you can wear them for those classes too.

The busier or more stressed you are, the more you need to go to Zumba

I find it is very tempting to stay late at work out of anxiety when times are stressful, but in fact I am always more productive the next day and better able to cope with the stress if I choose to go to Zumba instead. Exercise helps me to let go and relax mentally which is not something that comes easily to me, but it has certainly improved this past year with the help of Zumba.

The mental battle is harder than the physical

It was a huge aha moment for me when I realised this. Get yourself some support - whether it be asking your friends and family to remind you that you always feel better after going to a class, setting a reminder on your phone to go off an hr before the class with a positive encouraging message on it, or putting a picture of you when you looked and felt great on your fridge or by your bed to remind you of your goal.

Don't worry about getting the moves wrong!

Easier said than done of course, especially in the beginning. But remember this is about exercise and fitness so the main thing is to keep moving at all times your heart and lungs don't care if you moved your left foot or right hand at the wrong time. The body just loves having a workout - so just keep moving.

 Wear a watch in class

This really helps me with the mental battle and wanting to give up in the middle of the class, especially in the beginning when my fitness and energy levels were low. Sometimes a whole class can feel like forever. Wearing a watch helps me beak down the classes into smaller more doable chunks of time. I can see there is only 20 mins left, for example, which feels doable. Or I can encourage myself and say well done when I see I am halfway through a class, or almost there.  Now a year on I don't need it as much it still helps me on bad or tired days.

All that Zumba shaking and hip wiggling is great for your organs

Being in good condition isn't just about the outside - it's also crucially to do with the condition of our vital organs on the inside that keep us alive and healthy. Wiggling and shaking may not be very Irish but it is excellent for toning and conditioning the internal organs which is vital for true health. Plus its great fun, freeing and joyful to move your body in new ways!

Thank you Lily for the great classes, the encouraging atmosphere and for inviting me to write this blog post which I have really enjoyed. I  hope these tips help some of you and I look forward to at least another year of great Zumba classes - see you there!

The summer is coming to an end, but H+P is still out there, crushing race courses.  Here are some recent results:

Luke Eghoetz had an amazing race at the 2013 1/2 Ironman World Championships.  He averaged over 35hm/h on the bike, ran just over 1:30 for the half marathon, and managed to place inside the top 40 for his AG.  Click here for the results.

Sue and Liz both had awesome performances in the Wasaga Beech Sprint Duathlon.  It was their first time ever doing a multisport event- Liz even manged to place 3rd in her AG!  Results.

Erik had a great showing at the half-Ironman in Muskoka.  Coming of injuries from his Ironman, Erik still went out and had fun, placing in the top 50 in his AG!  Results.

Vance, despite a busy summer of racing, was back at it- this time in Montreal for the Duathlon National Championships.  He tore up the course, placing top 10 in his AG.  Results.

Adam and Kev had one last showdown for the year at the Hy-Vee Olympic National Triathlon Championships (for USA).  Adam did take the win, but Kev unfortunately suffered a flat on the course.  He did finish the race on a positive note though with a sub-42 10K.  Results.
